More Info* Upcoming maintenance to the Mustangs sculpture at Williams Square Plaza begins Monday, June 3. The iconic sculpture's maintenance requires the fountain to be drained. After the conservation maintenance is completed, the fountain will be refilled. Refilling is scheduled for Friday, June 7, weather permitting. Inclement weather could affect scheduling, including delays in the start or completion of work.
The Mustangs of Las Colinas, a breathtakingly realistic sculpture of nine bronze mustangs galloping across a granite prairie stream, is the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. Created by noted African wildlife artist Robert Glen, this magnificent art piece was installed in 1984 as the centerpiece of Williams Square Plaza in the Las Colinas Urban Center. In order to establish a unique identity for this urban space, the Mustangs of Las Colinas sculpture was created to capture the free spirit embodied in the heritage of Texas. Since its installation, this outstanding sculpture has become a North Texas top attraction pulling in visitors and residents alike.
Adjacent to the sculpture, in the East Tower of Williams Square Plaza, is the Mustang Sculpture Exhibit. Learn the story of the eight years of work artist Robert Glen invested in creating the Mustangs. The museum also presents a short film which brings to life the time and effort that went into designing, molding, and mounting this distinctive piece of public art. Other works of art by Robert Glen are also on display in the museum.
The newly renovated Williams Square Plaza at 5217 N. O’Connor Blvd., featuring the iconic Mustangs of Las Colinas, reopened in May 2022 after being under construction for the past year. The event debuted Irving’s $7.8 million investment to revitalize Williams Square Plaza and the Mustangs of Las Colinas.
The Mustangs of Las Colinas remain the focal point of the plaza, inviting visitors to take photos and explore one of the world’s largest bronze equine sculpture displays. The nine mustangs also underwent restorations with the assistance of their creator African wildlife artist Robert Glen. Additional enhancements include improved lighting and fountain upgrades.
Plaza upgrades include an urban greenspace area, which features a pedestrian-friendly open-air space surrounded by trees and landscape improvements, as well as moveable tables, chairs and a multipurpose patio.
The Mustang Sculpture Exhibit is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For group reservations, private showings or assistance outside of the regular operating hours, please call (469) 617-8929 or email at mustangs@cityofirving.org.
